For the second year running, Romford’s postcode was ranked as having the highest rate of car thefts. Between July 2020 and July 2021, the East London postcode had a rate of 16.38 thefts per 1,000 insurance enquiries.
The research, from MoneySuperMarket, showed that Romford saw an increase from 2020, when the rate was 15.74.
In second place is nearby Ilford and Barking with 15.71 thefts per 1,000 insurance enquiries.
Birmingham came in third place with 13.33 thefts, a surprising figure for such a large city.
Seven of the top 10 were in London, ranging from the West End, North London and Bromley.
All of the 10 most targeted areas of car thefts had a theft rate of at least 10.67 or above per 1,000 insurance enquiries.
The other three areas were Birmingham in third, Dudley in sixth and Stockport in ninth.
Praksha Patel-Shah, car insurance expert at MoneySuperMarket, commented on the study’s findings.
They said: “Not only can where you live and park your car increase the likelihood of you experiencing car theft, but criminals are now becoming more inventive and sophisticated when it comes to modern vehicles, so extra preventions may be necessary.
