Toyota announces new TNGA-B platform for small cars

The Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) is already being used for several models in the carmaker’s line-up, with the GA-C version of the platform underpinning the latest Prius, C-HR and Corolla, while the GA-K variant is for larger sedans and SUVs like the Camry and RAV4.

Now, the company has announced a new GA-B platform, which will apply the philosophy and technology of TNGA to elevate the design and driving performance of its small cars.

Modularity remains an important aspect of TNGA, and the GA-B platform allows for a variety of wheelbase lengths, vehicle heights and track widths, allowing designers and engineers to create vehicles of different sizes and body types.

The platform has also been designed to maximise interior space thanks to clever packaging, delivering a spacious and comfortable interior. Meanwhile, vehicle designers will have the freedom to create visually appealing vehicles with a low height and wide stance, as a result of the platform’s characteristics.

These include the positioning of non-visible components to simplify vehicle design in key areas, the upper body hard points and the driver’s hip point are positioned low, and the wheels at the platform corners are accompanied by very short overhangs.

Like the GA-C and GA-K versions of TNGA, the GA-B platform is designer to “deliver a confident and natural drive,” as Toyota explains. For starters, advanced joining technologies provide high levels of underbody rigidity, while keeping weight and cost in check.

Secondly, the MacPherson strut front suspension features low friction dampers and a variety of spring types. The rear suspension can be specified as either torsion beam or multi-link design depending on vehicle character and type.

The platform also positions the driver’s seat low and back towards the centre of the car, which helps to reduce the vehicle’s centre of gravity. Toyota adds that this also allows for a more engaging driving position, where the steering wheel hat can be set close to the driver at an optimised angle.

For now, there’s no word on what model will be the first to use the GA-B platform, and the next-generation Yaris could very well be a recipient. Small crossovers could also use the platform, given the modularity that it offers.
