Lifted, dirt-slinging Porsche 911s are nothing new. From the snow of Monte Carlo to the dust and heat of East Africa, the 911 has been rallying since the beginning. The Safari trend riffs on this, but with an updated and non-competition angle, aiming to become an all-terrain fun machine. Everyone seems to be getting in on the action lately: Gemballa, Ruf, Delta4x4, and even Porsche itself with the 911 Vision Safari concept the company made in 2012 but squirreled away from the public until last year. But an official, production 911 Safari? It’s happening.
The formula clearly involves more ground clearance. The 911 Safari you see here, captured by the CarSpyMedia YouTube account, shows lots of sidewall and lots of wheel well gap, although exactly zero Jeep Wranglers are going to feel threatened by its trail-crawling ability.
You can see fender extensions trying to hide underneath black masking. There’s a distinctive rear wing, but it’s only shown in the up position so it’s not totally clear how it’ll alter the rear end—or even whether it’ll make it onto a production Safari. The tailpipes look like an older design, but perhaps this is misdirection, or the 911’s quad round pipes are making a comeback.
We suppose that Porsche’s perfectly within its rights to play around with the generally sacrosanct 911 as we approach the seemingly inevitable event horizon of complete electrification, where the 911 will either have to go hybrid, electrify, or likely die out. Before that happens, why not build a factory 911 Safari? Sounds like a blast. Please throw us the keys immediately, Porsche.
