London’s ULEZ zone is the biggest clean air zone in the world, encompassing much of central London as the city aims to cut down on vehicle emissions. The area will be expanded on Monday October 25 to create a single, larger zone up to, but not including, the North Circular Road (A406) and South Circular Road (A205).

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has been the leading voice behind the expansion, citing the environmental benefits the zone has had.

When speaking about the upcoming COP26 conference, he said: “I’ll give you one example of the good news.

“We introduced in London, in 2019, the world’s first Ultra Low Emission Zone, to help clean up the air in London.

“And in just two years, we’ve managed to reduce the toxic air in the centre of our city by almost a half.

“And so, this coming Monday, we’re going to be expanding it to cover four million Londoners and hope to clean the air even more.

“Some of these solutions actually lead to improvements almost immediately.

“We now have in London more electric buses than any city in western Europe.

“We now have less carbon, less particulate matter, less nitrogen dioxide, more electric vehicle charging points and so forth.

“That’s why it’s so important for us to understand, yes there is a big challenge and a real problem with climate change and air pollution, but there are solutions as well.

“It’s really important that we embrace the solutions to fix the problem. This is the last chance.

“One of the things we’re doing is actually scrapping these (non-ULEZ-compliant) vehicles.

“Since we introduced the scheme more than 12,000 of these polluting vehicles have been scrapped.
