The 2022 Rivian R1T is billed as an “adventure vehicle,” and wilderness adventuring inevitably involves an evening circle around the campfire. If you’re not adventuring with musicians, you’ll probably appreciate streaming your favorite playlists to a Bluetooth speaker. But if you have an R1T, there’s no need to pack some chintzy one and remember to keep it charged, as the Rivian’s built-in, removable Bluetooth speaker—standard on the Launch Edition and included in the Adventure package—docks in the front of the center console and keeps itself juiced up via USB-C connection while on the trail. Oh, and if you happen to be adventuring through an area where open fires are discouraged, Rivian’s speaker can also throw off the warm yellow glow of a campfire.
Deep, Rich Sound
The onboard sound system is provided by Meridian, but the Bluetooth speaker is by Tymphany. The tall, square-section speaker includes a woofer, a tweeter, and two midrange speakers with passive radiators on the sides of the unit. For a single-point speaker, this little box throws off an impressive range of sound, from low bass notes to high-hat cymbals, that shames all the aftermarket Bluetooth speakers this author owns.
Lots of Streaming Options
Possible music connections to the Bluetooth speaker include Bluetooth, USB-C, and Wi-Fi. If there’s music playing on the Meridian audio system, it will broadcast to the speaker to serve as an extension. This allows the chef toiling at the camp kitchen to listen to the truck speakers while the family waiting at the distant picnic table enjoys the same jams. Or simply connect a smartphone to the speaker and stream a playlist directly.
6.5 Hours of Play in Any Weather
The 36-Wh battery can play for up to 6.5 hours, depending on lantern use, volume level, and method of connection. That should be plenty of time to last from camp setup through happy hour, dinner prep, dining, cleanup, and ghost-story telling, to lights out. All those speakers and battery add up to a solid 5.3 pounds, and the unit is weatherproof.
Yellow LED Lantern
The lantern function is handled by indirect yellow LEDs that shine down onto a curved reflective surface at the bottom to cast a flattering glow that can be set to three brightness levels: 30 percent, 60 percent, or 100 percent—perfect to match whatever ambiance you’re going for. For the moment, the light just shines continuously, but Rivian hints at an over-the-air update that could allow it to pulsate in time with the music selected, for a kickier vibe.
