Although some caravan and motorhome users have put their leisure vehicles away for the winter months, many are still travelling on staycations. Motorhome users in Yorkshire are trying to gain access to seaside town car parks over the off-peak season.

Generally, the winter months tend to be less busy for motorhome owners, with difficult weather conditions hampering their journeys.

Drivers are appealing to local councils in Whitby, Scarborough and other seaside towns in an attempt to have places to stay temporarily.

Whitby has previously been described by residents as a “ghost town” over winter months with a lack of tourism.

Many seasonal businesses have also closed their doors for the winter months with fewer visitors.

Motorhome owner Margaret Southward claimed: “Whitby doesn’t have to be a ghost town, the council has been asked many times to open their car parks on an evening to motorhomes and have been refused.

“We have a good disposable income and are prepared to spend it in towns and villages that welcome us.

“The council are so stupid they can’t see what they are missing out on, we buy provisions in the shops, go in their cafes, eat out and go to their pubs, it’s all money going into the town,” she told Yorkshire Live.

With the closure of some seasonal businesses, local seaside towns could benefit massively from the custom of motorhome and caravan owners.

El, said: “I’m a motorhome owner of 20 years, after recently retiring this year, I plan to use the van more frequently.

“If only Whitby and Scarborough council offered motorhome facilities, I might be tempted to visit as I stopped visiting about five years ago.”

There have been many requests made around the UK from motorhome users asking local authorities to allow them to use car parks over the winter.

Plans have been submitted to allow overnight parking in Northumberland, Gwynedd and East Anglia.
