GEM Motoring Assist has said being in pain behind the wheel was “not normal” and is not something drivers should simply “put up with”. They have warned discomfort and lower back pain are frequent complaints reported by many drivers but “especially” older motorists.
They have warned “inexpensive” and safe devices can reduce the discomfort for drivers and make journeys easier.
GEM Chief Executive Neil Worth said: “Driving forces us to sit in a constrained posture, sometimes for long periods of time.
“This can often lead to stiffness and reduced mobility, especially among older drivers.
“Common complaints include lower back pain, stiff neck, foot cramps, sore shoulders and finger cramp.
“We want drivers to adopt an approach that says: “Being in pain at the wheel is not normal and is not something I need to put up with’.”
He added: “We look at whether your car is as suitable for your needs and circumstances as it once was.
“We demonstrate inexpensive but safe devices that can reduce the discomfort associated with getting in and out, loading heavy luggage, turning your neck or fastening your seatbelt.”
Getting in and out
GEM urges drivers who struggle to get into or out of a car to get something extra to hold onto.

Drivers can get a range of large grips and handles that go onto the car door latch to offer extra safety.
They say steering wheels can offer some “extra leverage” but warn drivers could do long term damage if they keep using it.
GEM says it is “no excuse” to not wear a seatbelt just because it is uncomfortable to reach back and grab it.
They urge road users to consider easy-reach seat belt handles which are cheap to buy and easy to install.
