New Hyundai car receives ‘Don’t Buy’ warning from Which? after ‘serious safety concerns’

Hyundai’s new model has been described as a “mixed bag” after only scoring three out of five stars in the recent Euro NCAP safety tests. Which? Says a frontal collision into a deforming barrier saw the driver’s chest compressed so much the car received a “weak” rating.

In a head-on crash, the fake driver’s pelvis slid completely under the seatbelt causing the car to receive a “poor” rating.

In a collision with the far side, the dummy moved dramatically across the vehicle with o central airbags to protect the diver from hitting the front passenger.

Euro NCAP also criticised the design of the car’s dashboard, warning this posed serious risks of further injuries in a crash.

Which? warns the issues “lays bare a range of “very serious safety concerns” with the vehicle.

They warn the results shows drivers did not want to rely on the model to get good protection whatever accident they have.

Thatcham’s Research said the car scored the lowest ratings for occupant protection in four safety categories.

They added the performance of the cars Autonomous Emergency Braking system was also “disappointing”.

They warned the tool could detect pedestrians but the response is only marginal.

Furthermore, the vehicle was unable to detect cyclists at all in a major safety risk.

Euro NCAP impact tests were overhauled for 2020 with tougher measures for head-on collisions.

The changes work out how drivers share the force in collisions with larger cars needing to offer more protection to smaller vehicles.

Matthew Avery Thatcham’s Director of Research warned aggressive cars were being “marked down” as a result of the new tests.

He said it was clear some manufacturers were “finding compatibility a challenge” under the new rules.

Hyundai says the i10 is available with several new advanced driver assist systems.

The previous generation i10 did achieve a higher four-star but this was tested under the previous regulations which were less stringent.

A statement from Hyundai says the firm would ensure their cars were equipped with the latest safety features.

“According to the new and more severe criteria applied by Euro NCAP, the Hyundai i10 has received a three-star safety rating.

“With Euro NCAP increasing the severity of its criteria on a regular basis, we are satisfied that this reflects a good performance for an A-segment model.

“Hyundai believes the highest level of safety technology should be available to a broad range of customers, and we work to ensure our models are equipped with the latest advanced safety features.

“The latest generations of Hyundai vehicles have constantly been in the top range of their respective classes in Europe, if not the best, regarding safety and reliability.

“The i10 illustrates this philosophy very well, thanks to its extensive safety package.”
