New 2023 Hyundai i20 facelift arrives with tech upgrades

Hyundai’s i20 supermini has been given a mid-life refresh with a new design

It’s no secret that the supermini segment is struggling, with the imminent demise of the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen’s Polo facing an uncertain future, but Hyundai is persevering at the smaller end of the market, as evidenced by the newly facelifted Hyundai i20. 

The third-generation i20 arrived in 2020, so this year’s update is right on schedule. UK pricing and trim level specifications for the revised car are yet to be confirmed, although we expect it to go on sale in the next few months.

Hyundai has set about giving the i20 plenty of exterior tweaks to sharpen its looks. At the front there’s a new radiator grille and the badge has been relocated to the top of the bumper. The bumper itself has been completely restyled with side air intakes and a lower lip. The LED headlights from the N Line model look to have become standard across the new i20 range. 

A fresh set of 16-inch or 17-inch wheels are available and to the rear, the bumper has also been updated with a more prominent imitation diffuser. Hyundai has added three new exterior colours – Meta Blue Pearl, Lumen Grey Pearl and the Lucid Lime Metallic that our pictures show. 

That lime colour can be carried over to the interior as well. The seats can be specified with lime stitching as can various pieces of trim in the cabin. The i20 also gets a 4.2-inch LCD cluster, a USB type-C charging port and over-the-air sat-nav updates as standard. 

Optional extras include the twin 10.25-inch screens with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, an uprated sound system and a wireless smartphone charging pad. Safety has been bumped up too with an updated version of forward collision-avoidance assist and lane following assist. 

In terms of powertrains, the i20 will continue with the 1.0-litre three-cylinder with mild-hybrid technology in two states of tune – 99bhp or 118bhp. This will be offered with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic or a six-speed manual transmission. There’s no word yet on the i20 N hot hatch facelift, although we expect that to follow suit in 2024.
