In the final episode of Channel 4’s Guy’s Garage, the former motorcycle driver turned a vintage East German 1986 Trabant into a race car. Guy Martin had previously created race cars from a Range Rover, a three-wheeled Piaggio Ape and a Volvo 240 Estate, all in the hopes of winning races.
“I want to do the Trabant because it’s crap! Yeah slow, 20 horsepower. It takes 21 seconds to go from 0-60.”
Guy and Cammy were originally facing a cost of £12,000 for a Trabant, with import duties still to factor in, and so travelled to Croydon in hopes of getting a cheap vehicle.
They managed to buy a 26-horsepower 1986 Trabant which doesn’t run for the comparatively lower price of £2,100.
Twitter user Kyle Hooley gushed over Guy’s mission to create a racing car out of a Trabant.
They said: “Guy Martin is just a man living his childhood dream isn’t he, what a bloke.”
Another Twitter user, using the handle DaveyBoi73, said: “S*** at negotiating buying these cars for.
“But yeah, he’s great.”
Guy then agreed to buy a spare Trabant engine for €3,000 euros, much to the dismay of Cammy and many viewers.

Guy’s Trabant racing trainer, Bart, informs him that the ancient Communism-era Trabants are more popular than Tesla’s in Germany.
“That’s an interesting fact. There’s still 33,000 Trabants? Never mind all them knackers that are in the yard.
“There are 33,000 registered? Holy S***!”
A third Twitter user, Dr Jodie M, said: “The Trabant has such an interesting history.
