Halfords are warning that cold weather, cars being left on driveways over the holidays and work from home policies will all cause the issue to be seen more commonly. Millions of motorists could face flat batteries once they start their cars after the festive period.
Many drivers will still be heading to work this week in spite of the work from home advice from the Government.
New research from the UK’s leading motoring retailer shows that 70 percent of motorists have experienced a flat battery.
Despite this, almost one third of drivers are clueless when it comes to fixing one.
Road users typically experience delays of two hours when their battery does fall flat.
The risk of a flat battery is heightened at this time of year as freezing temperatures cause a strain on batteries.
This is coupled with the fact that cars are left unused for an average of almost four days over the Christmas period.
Many families choose to use just one car during the festivities, leaving the other idle on the drive for even longer.
Adding even more strain is the fact that there are fewer motorists on the roads generally right now as people limit social contact and follow work from home guidance.

Richard Bruce, Motoring Director from Halfords commented on the findings, urging drivers to get their vehicles checked.
He said: “Car batteries are put under a lot of pressure over the winter months and then often left idle while we all enjoy the Christmas break.
“But this does risk leaving drivers stranded when they resume travelling again.
“It’s important that drivers are as prepared as possible.
