Supermarket giant Tesco have advised drivers they can clear the frost and ice from the car windscreen “the easy way”. A video shows a homemade mixture of common household items, which they have described as a “money-saving de-icer”.

It shows three simple ingredients for drivers to clear their windscreen: distilled vinegar, a glass of water and a spray bottle.

Motorists should mix three parts distilled vinegar and one part water and place the mixture into the spray bottle.

The video then shows the bottle being shaken.

It can then be sprayed onto the windscreen and should be left on for around five minutes.

After this time, the ice or frost should have melted away, leaving a clear windscreen, ready for drivers to embark on their journey.

Vinegar contains acetic acid which lowers the melting point of water – preventing water from freezing.

It can also help ice from forming in the first place if the solution is sprayed onto the windscreen the night before.

It can also be used to de-ice paths and driveways, according to HomeQuicks.

They advise: “Add one part of white vinegar and mix it with one part of water.

“Stir the solution well, and pour it in a sprayer.

“Spray the solution on snow to melt it.

“However, you can add more vinegar in the solution if the snow is thick or is taking a lot of time to melt.
