Motorcaravans owners could face car tax costs of £60 per day – ‘how can this be right?’

A Clean Air Zone (CAZ) is currently being set up in Greater Manchester aimed at lowering vehicle emissions. They are following on from the examples of Birmingham and Bath with a CAZ, as well as London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ).

The first roadside camera to enforce the Clean Air Zone policy across Greater Manchester was installed in Bolton at the start of this month.

The CAZ in Greater Manchester is set to be rolled out next year, in a bid to bring down harmful levels of nitrogen dioxide.

It’s set to be England’s biggest CAZ, spanning 10 local authority areas across Greater Manchester.

These areas will include: Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, Wigan, and the cities of Manchester and Salford.

Vans, buses, coaches, taxis, private hire vehicles and lorries driving in Bolton which fail to meet emission standards will be affected by the plans.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Combined Authority commented on how motorcaravans would be classified.

They said: “Feedback from the 2020 Greater Manchester Clean Air Plan consultation highlighted that, due to the way motorcaravans are categorised on their V5C document, some will currently be charged to drive within the GM Clean Air Zone and some would not.

“Motorcaravans that have an N1 and N2 classification, or are blank under vehicle category on the VC5 document, are currently included in the charging scheme.

“We are proposing to include M1 and M1 special purpose vehicles with a body type of motorcaravan in the charging scheme as well.

“The updated proposals aim to ensure that all motorcaravans and campervans, that may look similar and have similar emissions, are treated equally, regardless of administrative vehicle categories.

There will be a daily charge of £10 for N1 vehicles, which are under 3.5 tons, and £60 for N2 vehicles, which are over this weight.
