In the late 1970s, high-end fashion house Gucci collaborated with General Motors to introduce a luxury package for the first-generation Cadillac Seville. While GM did not produce any Gucci edition Seville models or sold them directly at Cadillac dealerships, GM authorized the Italian designer to outfit the cars under the Seville by Gucci name.
Upon completing the blueprint for the luxurious trim, Gucci enlisted Miami-based company International Automotive Design Incorporated (IAD) to carry out the work. With plans to sell the outfitted V-8-powered sedan exclusively through a Florida distributor, IAD ordered the Sevilles from the factory and took delivery at a Cadillac dealer in Miami. Designed by Aldo Gucci, the 1978 Cadillac Seville by Gucci combined Detroit automotive design and legendary Italian styling.
The upscale treatment added many ornate finishes, including a vinyl Gucci-patterned quarter roof covering, a saddle-colored leather interior, and 24-karat gold Gucci emblems all around. Exterior paint choices were Sable Black, Demitasse Brown (later Post Road Brown), and Cotillion White, the most popular choice among buyers. Other swanky details included the Gucci family crest embedded in the C-pillars, an interlocking double “G” hood ornament, and a Gucci Web stripe across the rear deck lid. And to top it all off, Gucci edition Sevilles came complete with a five-piece matching luggage set and gold Gucci keys and keychain.
Gucci did not plan the special edition of Seville as a high-volume model, and production ran from 1978 to 1984 through two generations. Although records indicate that 200 examples came to fruition for the 1979 model year, the total number produced remains unknown.
To celebrate its 100th anniversary, Gucci partnered with Mattel Creations to launch a limited-edition Hot Wheels x Gucci Cadillac Seville. The first official collectible from Gucci and high fashion partnership for Hot Wheels, this 1:64 scale model pays tribute to the original collaboration between Gucci and GM.
An expression of late ’70s flair and avant-garde style, the scaled-down Hot Wheels toy immortalizes the 1982 Cadillac Seville by Gucci. It features an all-metal die-cast body and chassis, iconic interlocking GG pattern, gold piping on the seats, Real Riders tires, and the classic Gucci logo. Making a statement today as it did decades ago, the Seville by Gucci has an influential role in the current Radwood global movement that celebrates the 1980s and 1990s automotive lifestyle.
The 1:64 scale model comes encased in an acrylic display with a Gucci box and slipcover featuring the brand’s signature green paper. Mattel Creations will make the Hot Wheels x Gucci 1982 Cadillac Seville available starting October 18. Customers can snag their copy for $120 online and at select Gucci stores, including New York and Tokyo.
