Around 51 percent of drivers believe the speed limit on motorways is too low with a limit of 80mph being preferred with a change to driving laws. Almost a third of drivers (29 percent) want to see an increase to 90mph, with a further 21 percent wanting a speed limit of 100mph.
Some European nations have motorway speed limits of 130kmh or around 80mph.
Around 97 percent of drivers admit to going over the speed limit, with 23 percent of UK males driving over 100 mph.
Shockingly, nearly 10 percent of males say they have reached speeds of 120mph or more.
This comes as many local authorities around the country are debating whether to lower or raise the speed limits.
Some Scottish MSP’s have called on the Government to revise the current HGV speed limits to help lower the death rate.
They want to see the existing limit of 40mph on single carriageways and 50mph on dual carriageways to be increased.
This would be in line with the 60mph speed limit adopted in England.
However, some campaigners are calling on the UK Government to slash the speed limit in towns from 30mph to 20mph.
