Kandi America has presented a third fully electric offering to its small, curious lineup. It’s called the Off-Road EV K32, and it joins the company’s K23 and K27 NEVs (Neighborhood Electric Vehicles). The K32 is an electric truck, and for truck people who love all-things truck and have a palette for all types of truck candy, this thing might slowly grow sweeter and sweeter.
Those who find the delectable Kandi K32 sweet enough to throw down $27,699 for the standard range (60-mile range) or $34,499 for the long range (150-mile range) model can reserve one now for $100. Considering that the K32 isn’t street legal—it might as well be a truck-looking UTV or a side-by-side—that’s an astonishing price tag, although it has does more truck-like attributes than the Pickman, a $20,000 competitor, and Mahindra’s $16,000 not-a-Jeep Roxor, a similar off-road-only UTV-ish thing. Still, that’s a hard pill to swallow, considering you can get a 2022 Ford Maverick for about $20,000—and drive it on all the street and trails your heart desires, front-wheel-drive be darned.
The four-door Kandi K32 electric truck might look tiny, and the UTV comparisons might have you thinking that is so, but it actually isn’t. Don’t be fooled by those-super rad old-school bed rails or disproportionally tiny-looking 265/65/R17 tires and that giant gap between the rear tires and the wheel wells that make it look so awkwardly adorable. It’s actually 214 inches long, 73.6 inches wide, 82 inches high, and has a wheelbase of 122 inches. That makes it longer (14.3 inches), wider (1 inch), and taller (13.3 inches) than our handy example, the compact Ford Maverick—although the wheelbases are nearly identical. It’s hard to believe, but the K32 more resembles a midsize truck like a Ranger or a Chevy Colorado than a baby-faced compact. And with a curb weight of 4,089 pounds, it can hang with some full-size trucks. Woof.
The all-wheel drive Kandi K32 is expensive and big, but that’s the cost of getting some competitive automotive features that most UTVs lack. It has a smart, techy 10.0-inch center touchscreen and colorful digital gauge cluster. It has a backup camera, Bluetooth hands-free device capability, and even a “car seat fixture” which must make family trips on private property more convenient. Pictures depict a front winch, a roll bar in the bed, and off-roading lighting on the roof. The seats seem to be vinyl rather than cloth, and the dash and door panel finishes appear smooth and moderately classy. A ginormous e-brake lever sits at the driver’s right hand, lest we be too captivated by its interior and forget to have some fun.
Kandi’s electric off-roader comes with a set of warranties in addition to basic coverage: 3-years/36,000 miles for the powertrain; 5-years/30,000 miles for the 20.7 kWh or 50 kWh lithium-ion battery; and 3-years/24,000 miles for corrosion. Texas-based Kandi America is the result of Kandi Technologies Group’s acquisition of SC Autosports in 2018 to be its exclusive stateside distributor.
