Ann and Edward Thorpe later appealed the heavy parking charge but the penalty was not upheld. She has pledged to not “go back” to a beach she said she “loves” in a tragic blow for the couple.

Ms Thorpe says her son did not leave the car to ensure they paid the parking warden if they visited.

She said: “We were staying at South Beach for a few days and on the way home we wanted them to see the beach, because we’ve been before and it’s a lovely beach.

“I told my son, ‘stay in the car and if he comes I’ll pay him.’

“I just took the kids to see the beach for 15 minutes or so, but no one had been to take payment.”

The couple travelled from Leeds to Bridlington in Yorkshire for a holiday and decided to stop at Fraisthorpe Beach on their way home.

Ms Thorpe claims she did not see any signs instructing her how to pay the fee.

However, days later she was issued a £60 fine through the post.

Ms Thorpe said she paid the fine but later received a letter saying she would receive an extra £40 penalty for sending the cheque through late.

The situation has distressed the couple so much they have vowed to never return.

She said: “No I wouldn’t go back there and that’s a shame, because it’s a beautiful part of the world.

“I love that beach, but no I wouldn’t and the cafe is lovely, but I wouldn’t go there again.”

She has also written a letter to the landowner questioning the management of the car park.
