GMC has unveiled its latest overlanding project at the 2021 Overland Expo Mountain West event in Loveland, Colorado. Because every good off-road concept is obliged to carry a name, this one is called OVRLANDX. At the core of the adventure rig, under all the overland garb, is a GMC Canyon AT4.
OVRLANDX looks the part thanks to a roof-mounted tent, a 270-degree awning, and a solar panel. You can’t say overlanding without these quintessential off-grid accessories.
A stainless steel truck bed cap conceals an electric cooler and a convenient kitchenette, which are mounted atop a Decked drawer storage system. Cold beverages and hot food are essential while overlanding. The covered bed also houses gasoline and water Jerry cans should such supplies run low during a wilderness run. Recovery gear like traction boards for self-extraction and an off-road jack for trailside fixes also reside in the bed.
The clean and uncluttered exterior is characterized by tasteful off-road protection. The heavy-duty front bumper has a winch and integrated recovery points, and the rear bumper comes courtesy of AEV. Rocker panel protectors and a plethora of underbody skid plates defend body and running gear from rocks and debris. Guy lines from the front fenders to the roof protect the windshield from branches (and Bigfoot). An air-intake snorkel keeps the GMC Canyon AT4’s 3.6-liter V-6 powerplant happy, should the truck encounter up to 32.1 inches of water.
OVRLANDX has 10.0 inches of ground clearance thanks to a factory lift and 33-inch BFGoodrich KM3 Mud-Terrain tires mounted on 17-inch AEV Cestone wheels. (A factory Canyon AT4 has 31-inch tires.) Clearance and protection are provided by prominent plastic wheel fender flares (which even have integrated lights). A full-size spare tire rides on the back of the truck and is mounted in such a way that it can swivel out of the way to let the tailgate fall open.
We think the GMC Canyon AT4 OVRLANDX concept foreshadows something greater. This is not mere eye candy, and it’s more than a rolling billboard that reminds show-goers that GMC is a good fit for those pursuing an adventurous outdoor lifestyle. With its Multimatic DSSV dampers, AEV-branded bumper and wheels, and front and rear electronic locking differentials, could this concept preview GMC’s version of the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison? We hope so.
