The research, from MoneySuperMarket’s “Young Drivers Index”, found that drivers aged 17 to 19 chose the Ford Fiesta, which came in top. The Vauxhall Corsa and the Volkswagen Polo came in second and third respectively.

Despite the popularity amongst Gen Z, the Ford Fiesta has a higher average price for full comprehensive cover, coming at £711.

This is slightly higher than the Vauxhall Corsa at £689 and £55 higher than the Volkswagen Polo at £656.

These prices do plummet for those over the age of 20, with the highest full cover price of the top ten most popular cars being the Vauxhall Corsa Limited Edition, at £508.

Praksha Patel-Shah, car insurance expert at MoneySuperMarket, commented: “After a year of delays to theory and practical tests due to Coronavirus, many young drivers may now be looking to purchase their first car in 2021, especially with new car number plates due on 1st September.

“Car insurance premiums are often higher for drivers who have recently passed their test as insurers associate more risk with them.

“Prices can also differ significantly depending on the type of car you drive.

“However, there are a number of ways for newly qualified Brits to reduce their insurance premium.

“You can keep costs down by reducing your mileage or opting for a higher excess.

“You could even look into telematics policies which use data to monitor how people drive and use this to determine the cost of their car insurance – the more careful the driver, the more competitively priced the policy.

“It’s also important that you don’t just accept the first car insurance quote you receive.

“By shopping around and comparing you could easily save yourself up to £235.”

MoneySuperMarket analysed over one million quotes made by its customers between June 2020 and June 2021 to identify the most popular car with first-time drivers aged 17-19, and the typical cost of insuring these vehicles.
