F1 champion Lewis Hamilton drove ‘very modest’ Mini Cooper as his first car 20 years ago

Hamilton may be known for his Formula 1 title-winning seasons at McLaren and Mercedes but his car journey started in a humble second hand Mini Cooper. The seven-time champion purchased the British icon straight after passing his driving test in 2002.

His decision to purchase the model did not come completely out of the blue.

Hamilton has previously revealed he got behind the wheel of his mum’s Mini before deciding to purchase one.

Experts at CarFinance247 said the car was “smooth to drive” and would have had “reasonable running costs”.

Louis Rix, Co-founder at Car Finance 247 said the model “couldn’t have been a better fit” for Hamilton.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, he said: “Lewis Hamilton – considered to be the greatest F1 driver of all time – had a very modest first car, entirely inspired by his mum!

“The MINI Cooper was (and still is!) an agile, nippy car offering punchy performance.

“With MINI being a proudly British brand, it couldn’t have fit better for our homegrown racing superstar.

“Having had help from his dad to initially purchase his second-hand MINI, the car would have been great for a first-time driver.

“It’s smooth to drive, easy to park and boasts reasonable running costs.”

The next car on Hamilton’s list was a Mercedes C 200 which was leant to him by a dealership.

He has previously said the car helped him get into nightclubs when he was younger as he looked underage.

He followed this up with a classic Ferrari 599 GTO which he purchased eight years later in 2010.
