Experts at warn authorities could “scrap the option” of allowing drivers to turn off the tools in the future. When they are first launched the tools will be fitted with an on/off switch so drivers can override the system.

Drivers can also override the system by pressing hard on the accelerator pedal.

However, there are fears this will be axed in a bid to further improve road safety. said: “The system has an on/off switch.

“The default setting for the system is on, but the speed limiter can be disabled by being switched off – at least for the time being.

“It’s possible that the authorities might scrap the option of turning it off in the future.

“If you turn it off, it will stay off until you restart the vehicle.”

This has been supported by comments made in 2017 by the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) who also suggested drivers may not be able to override the tool.

The ETSC said an override tool would only be fitted in Intelligent Speed Assistance systems ”temporarily”.

They said they would only support a full on/off switch for the system to “aid public acceptance at introduction”.

They added: “However the system should be on by default and any temporary switched off state should remain only until the vehicle is restarted.

“Switching off the system should require the user to hold down the button for several seconds to avoid accidental switch off.

ISA technology will be made mandatory for all new cars sold in the EU from July 2022.
