A pair of middleweights has joined the crowd of new and updated motorcycles launched at EICMA in Milan, Italy, this time the 2020 Aprilia RS660 sports bike and Tuono RS660 naked sports. This signifies Aprilia’s re-entry into the middleweight road bike arena which was previously occupied by the Shiver and Dorsoduro 750.
Carrying a parallel-twin mill displacing 660 cc, Aprilia says the RS660 will produce about 100 hp. With dry weight claimed to be 169 kg, the RS660 might just be a contender in the middleweight sports market, going up against the Triumph Street Triple 765RS.
Precious few details are available for the RS660 save that suspension uses 41 mm diameter upside-down forks and braking is done by Brembo while the gerbox is equipped with an up-and-down quickshifter. Inside the cockpit, a full-colour TFT-LCD can be found with the panel in the press photograph showing smartphone connectivity and rider-to-passenger intercom connection.
A six-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) is part of the package, which, with the ride-by-wire throttle, gives traction control and five ride modes as a matter of course, part of the latest generation APRC package, including cornering ABS. LED lighting is found throughout, including the three-element headlight with LED DRLs.
Also at the launch of the RS660 was the naked sports Tuono 660 Concept. Essentially the same rolling gear and engine as the RS660, the full-fairing of the RS660 is replaced by a quarter fairing and standard handlebars instead of clip-ons, with 95 hp.
