E10 was introduced as the new standard grade of unleaded petrol in September, designed to be more environmentally friendly by blending the petrol with up to 10 percent ethanol. Despite this, some drivers have reported issues with the new petrol, saying it has caused problems with their engine and fuel economy.

Express.co.uk reader, LordWhiteley said: “I sold my last petrol car earlier in the summer. I never used E10 in it.

“Where I live E10 has been available for much longer.

“When comparing petrol against diesel prices and consumption figures for both fuels it is a no-brainer to choose a diesel car. 

“I wouldn’t have said such a thing even a year ago.

“I am looking to replace our remaining car and see among otherwise comparable cars that petrol models are difficult to sell, losing value, while diesels are maintaining their prices.

“It is clear to me that politicians are slowly killing off petrol by forcing it to be offered as a rubbish brew that nobody wants, as a consequence forcing petrol cars into extinction as daily transport.”

In response, HT4, claimed: “Forecourt tanks suffer from continuous condensation of water vapour, which collects at the bottom of the tanks with petrol floating on top.

“The petrol is pumped out from several inches above the bottom of the tank to avoid taking the water with it.

“What has happened is that the new E10 petrol – because it has more ethanol in it- attracts and mixes with the water to a greater extent.

“Once the forecourt tanks have been refilled several times this should no longer be a problem.

“But if your car has run badly over the last few weeks it is probably because you have bought a petrol/water mix.”

When the fuel was originally introduced in September, the Department for Transport said drivers may experience a slight reduction in fuel economy, generally around one percent.
