Experts at H&H Classics warn drivers will need to top-up with the more expensive E5 fuel if their vehicle is incompatible with the new E10 petrol. H&H says “most classic cars” will be affected by the new E10 changes.
They have warned drivers should be using E5 fuel even if rates have dramatically increased over the past week.
Damien Jones, Head of Sales at H&H Classics said: “Most classic cars are indeed incompatible with the new E10 petrol.
“However, you can still buy E5 petrol, albeit it in a more expensive, higher octane guise as Super Unleaded.
“There are no plans at present to stop selling Super Unleaded which most petrol stations stock.
“There was a similar ‘concern’ when leaded fuel was phased out during the 1990s.”
E5 fuel prices have dramatically increased since the petrol was moved from the standard pump to Super Unleaded.
According to experts at Vertu Motors, rates between the new E10 compound and the old E5 are now up to 12p per litre more.
In the North East, Vertu Motors says prices have increased by around £6.50 for each top-up of a 50-litre tank.

Prices have increased by just over £5 across the rest of the UK with some areas such as Scotland seeing lower £4.70 rises.
Before the launch of E10, the AA warned prices could even rise by up to £15 for classic car owners.
They predicted E5 rates could rise from 135.4p per litre to 163.9p once E5 was moved to the Super Unleaded pump.
This would see the cost of filling a 55-litre tank rise from £74.47 to £90.15.
