The backlog of driving licence applications continues to be an issue for the DVLA as it issued an update on processing dates. Paper applications and logbooks could take the longest with delays of up to 12 weeks.

While the agency says there are no current delays with online applications, those still waiting for licences may still be able to drive if they meet certain criteria.

The DVLA says the delays are down to COVID safety measures and previous strike action.

Although it states its staff are working hard to process applications, more complex cases like those requiring medical checks can take additional time.

The update showed that some applications from as far back as last November are still being worked on.

Last month Express.co.uk reported on some drivers waiting as long as 24 weeks for their licence.

The DVLA website states: “Our online services are working as normal and without delay.

This is the quickest, easiest, and often cheapest way to deal with us.

“We recommend that you use our online services where possible.”
