Talking specifically about Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV), they said drivers were still “uncertain” about future technology and infrastructure needs. BVRLA Chief Executive Gerry Keaney has called for the Government to learn lessons from the past and ensure these are “fed through to the market”.

He said: “All of the members we spoke to as part of this consultation highlighted the massive uncertainty around future powertrain technology and infrastructure requirements.

“The HGV market will need massive long-term grants and incentives to go zero-emission.

“Government needs to ensure that any of the lessons and insights learnt from the various trials currently underway are fed through to the market quickly and clearly.”

The comments come as they respond to the consultation over the phase-out of petrol and diesel HGV’s between 2035 and 2040.

The BVRLA has suggested the Government reconsiders its timings for the phase-out of petrol and diesel models.

As a minimum, it believes the vehicle threshold for 2035 and 2040 should occur at 18 tonnes and not 26 tonnes.

The group has also asked for an increase to maximum permissible weights to cater for the additional weight of zero-emission technology.

To help achieve this, the BVRLA has urged the Government to develop a delivery plan based loosely on the one used for cars and vans.

To achieve this, the BVRLA has recommended the launch of a new taskforce to make recommendations for the new plan.

This will help the project to reach its phase-out dates and develop solutions that may be needed to overcome them.

According to the DfT HGV’s accounted for 16 percent of UK’s transport emissions in 2019.

Overall HGV carbon dioxide emissions have fallen by five percent since 1990.
