The changes are being introduced on Tuesday, September 28, and will require drivers to make changes to their number plate. Prior to Brexit, British number plates featured a circle of EU stars with the letters “GB” underneath.

This allowed drivers to travel and drive abroad.

One year after Brexit, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps unveiled a redesigned number plate.

On January 31, 2021, he tweeted: “After Covid lockdown, Brits will be able to drive on the Continent without GB stickers thanks to NEW reg plate with Union Flag and GB.

“Plus driving licences will NOT require International Driving Permits – all confirmed today on anniversary of leaving EU.”

The UN announced shortly after that the “GB” designation which had been in place for the past 111 years, is to be replaced.

It will instead feature the letters “UK” to include Northern Ireland.

The new “UK” sticker or magnet can be purchased online, in post offices, or in garages.

Drivers can also apply for a new UK number plate to comply with the latest changes.

A Halfords spokesperson said: “From 28th September, British motorists travelling abroad will be legally required to display a UK sticker on their vehicle, in place of the old GB one.

“Failure to adhere to the new regulations may lead to refusal on entry and holidays ruined.

“On hand to help ahead of the change come into force, Halfords are selling magnetic and non-magnetic stickers for £3.99 in-store and online.”

According to the Stoke Sentinel, drivers will need to display a UK sticker clearly on the rear of their vehicle.
