Motorists have reported using up to “10 percent more fuel” under the new compound in a major blow to finances in the run-up to Christmas. Some motorists have said they will continue to use E5 despite it costing more to top up as they “forget E10”.
Express reader I N COGNITO said: “My 2021 Hybrid’s fuel consumption continues to rise on E10.
“It’s gone from 55.4 MPG and is currently down to 48.4
“It’s dropped .5 in a week.”
Express reader LongTom added: “I was filling up every 10 days, now it’s every seven days.”
Reader Trevor Ammanford has also complained about losing miles per gallon since using the fuel.
However, he has claimed the drop in fuel efficiency was a bid to force drivers to pay more in tax.
He said: “33mpg on E5 petrol. 30mpg on E10 petrol.
“The figures speak for themselves.

“To go the same distance, I must buy 10 percent more fuel = 10 percent more tax.”
Another reader said: “I do one specific journey of 272 miles once most months.
“My trip computer says I am doing MAYBE half a mile per gallon less [than] before, my wallet (allowing for fuel inflation) agrees.
“Over such a short [distance] it’s difficult to be sure.”
