The new rule means drivers will need to display a ‘UK’ sticker when travelling abroad instead of the old style ‘GB’ logos. Drivers who already have a GB sticker on their vehicles have been told to “cover or remove it” before heading abroad.
GOV.UK said: “You will need to display a UK sticker clearly on the rear of your vehicle if your number plate has any of the following:
- a GB identifier with the Union flag (also known as the Union Jack)
- a Euro symbol
- a national flag of England, Scotland or Wales
- numbers and letters only – no flag or identifier
“If your number plate includes the UK identifier with the Union flag (also known as the Union Jack), you do not need a UK sticker.
“If you’re in Spain, Cyprus or Malta, you must display a UK sticker no matter what is on your number plate.
“If you have a GB sticker, cover or remove it.”
Halfords have previously warned drivers could be “refused entry” if they failed to follow the new rules.
They said: “From 28th September, British motorists travelling abroad will be legally required to display a UK sticker on their vehicle, in place of the old GB one.
“Failure to adhere to the new regulations may lead to refusal on entry and holidays ruined.

“On hand to help ahead of the change come into force, Halfords are selling magnetic and non-magnetic stickers for £3.99 in-store and online.”
According to the RAC, the new sticker is thought to be a show of solidarity with Northern Ireland after Brexit.
The UK stands for the United Kingdom, which comprises Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Meanwhile, Great Britain only signifies England, Scotland and Wales.
