Experts at Euro Car Parts warn leaves can “turn into mulch” which can cause them to become “slippery”. They have urged drivers to not travel in areas with lots of trees in a bid to avoid being caught out.
If this is not possible, they say drivers should always “avoid the edges of the road” as this could be where the situation is at its worst.
Euro Car Parts said: “Despite making autumn a beautiful time of year, falling leaves can pose a serious hazard for motorists.
“This is because when wet leaves are crushed by cars, they can turn into mulch and become slippery.
“Pay extra attention when driving through rural or tree-lined areas and, if possible, try to avoid the edges of the road where leaves are usually more concentrated.”
Experts at Saga warn hitting a bunch of leaves is “almost as bad as hitting black ice”.
They warn country lanes could be the most affected routes and have urged drivers to “keep speed down” when using them.
Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service has also issued a warning on the dangers of leaves.
They warned stopping distances may be affected by slight leaf cover and urged drivers to “leave a longer distance”.

They said: “Your vehicle will take much longer to stop on a wet surface, particularly one covered with wet leaves.
“Adjust your speed and leave a longer following distance so that you are always able to stop in the distance seen to be clear.”

They warned the arrival of Autumn brings “additional hazards on the roads” as they urged road users to be prepared at all times.
