The new rule would see it become a legal requirement for drivers to report when they have hit a cat with penalties applying for those who don’t. Authorities could then be made to scan the cat to determine where it lives to give families an opportunity to say goodbye to their pet.
Campaigners say there should be “consequences in place” for those who do not stop their cars and report an incident.
They suggested drivers should be hit with a large fine but did not say whether penalty points should be awarded.
The poll was created on Parliament’s official petition site by Leanne Carden.
She said: “Make it a legal requirement for drivers to report when a cat has been hit in a road traffic accident.
“The police or relevant local authority should then be required to ensure that any cats hit by a car is scanned for a microchip in order to inform their owner, before the cat is disposed of.
“The Government need to have this law in place in order to ensure that these incidents are reported, and to help grieving owners.
“[It will] give a family some closure when their pet is missing.
“There should be consequences in place for those who don’t stop and or don’t report the accident such as a large fine.

“Scanning for microchip must also be a legal requirement in order to help families have closure which can benefit mental health.”
The poll has so far received just 496 signatures but is set to run until the end of January.
The Government will only respond to the petition when 10,000 signatures have been reached.
Meanwhile, the proposals could then be debated in parliament if 100,000 signatures are received.
