They warned the “size of the fine varies across the UK” but added drivers in London were set to be the most affected by the driving law. The warning comes after new research from Confused.com shows hundreds of drivers have broken the rules.
A total of 44 percent of 2,000 drivers surveyed said they had accidentally driven in a bus lane at some point when they were behind the wheel.
Confused.com said: “If you use a bus lane incorrectly, you could be issued with a penalty charge notice (PCN), which is a fine.
“The size of the fine varies across the UK.
“Typically the fines are highest in London and can be well over £100.
“You usually get a 50 percent discount if you pay within a certain number of days though.”
However, Confused.com also adds drivers are “unlikely” to receive points on their driving licence.
They also confirmed it “shouldn’t” have an impact on motorists car insurance policies.
The Highway Code confirms drivers “should not drive in a bus lane” at times it is in operation.

Rule 141 says: “These are shown by road markings and signs that indicate which (if any) other vehicles are permitted to use the bus lane.
“Unless otherwise indicated, you should not drive in a bus lane during its period of operation.
“You may enter a bus lane to stop, to load or unload where this is not prohibited.”
Previous data from Confused.com claimed almost two million fines were issued for bus lane infringements in 2019.
