Motorists can avoid the £8 daily fee to use roads in Birmingham city centre using a new feature from Waze. Volunteer map editors have added permit notification and a designated Clean Air Zone area to the maps.

This means road users can now easily identify whether their vehicle is complaint and offer alerts to help non-compliant road users being accidentally caught out.

The changes will ensure drivers can avoid roads that will incur daily fees if they do not want to pay.

Likewise, the updates mean drivers will not be unnecessarily issued a fine for accidentally crossing into the zone.

Speaking to, Volunteer Community Map Editor, @Atrophicshiner, supported the new Clean Air Zone.

However, they said the new tool would allow divers to plan their journeys better which would lead to “less traffic” on the roads.

They said: “As Waze map editors, we are constantly working behind the scenes on new routing and regulation updates.

“Waze users in Birmingham can now plan their journeys ahead of time, avoid Clean Air Zone restrictions and experience a map that is both accurate and continually evolving.

“For a long time cars have heavily influenced the design of our towns and cities, so it’s noble for Birmingham to prioritise public health.

“The past 18 months have already shown us that less traffic means better air quality and wellbeing.

“To implement clean air long term, cities should consider affordable zero-emission vehicles with comprehensive support networks.”

Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone scheme covers all roads inside the A4540 Middleway Ring Road.

The charges will be in operations 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
