The HCVA warned importing classic cars into the UK for restoration work has been made “more difficult” since Brexit. However, the pressure group has confirmed they will pitch new plans to the Government that will completely change the current rules.

They have not yet confirmed the details of the proposal but have told owners to “watch this space”.

The HCVA said: “Bringing cars into the UK for repair and restoration work at our dedicated specialists inevitably became a whole lot more difficult from January 1 this year.

“Thanks to our experts led by Jeremy at CARS UK, HCVA is working on a proposal to Government that could massively improve the situation.

“Watch this space.”

The new changes could provide a massive boost for the UK classic car industry.

The new rules could encourage many classic car fans in the UK to look overseas for vehicles which would open up extra choices.

Meanwhile, encouraging European classic car owners to use British restoration firms would be expected to boost revenue.

Experts at Hagerty have previously revealed how the classic car industry has handled the UK’s departure from the EU.

They warned the new rule “comes with a raft of new bureaucracy” which was affecting owners.

Bonham Christie told Hagerty classic cars which are loaded onto a trailer suddenly becomes classified as ‘goods’.

This means road users need a variety of new documents which adds a “layer of cost and complexity” for owners.

He said: “You need a ‘green card’ from your insurer for each element—the car, the towing vehicle, and the trailer.
