Nigel Elliot, fuel specialist at the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC) has addressed concerns from road users on the economy of the new petrol. Speaking on the MG Car Club Podcast, he warned running E10 would have some impact on classic car efficiency rates.

However, he warned this was a ”very small amount” and not too different from the efficiency rates of different fuels.

He said ordinary petrol will also come with some “consumption differences” despite drivers not being aware,

He said: “It’s a very small amount really in the big scheme of things.

“Yes there is a debit, but remember from batch to batch of ordinary petrol you will see fuel consumption differences if you measure it very very precisely.

“The balance does change slightly depending on the crudes you’re running and how the refineries are operating.

“There are other oxygenated blend components already used in petrol.

“These are things like MTBE which is an ether and ETBE which is another ether.

“Those two blend components are high octane and bring significant amount of oxygen.

“We will have to go back and compare with straight petrol with none of it oxygenating.

“The debit is around 2.6 percent or so for running on E10.”

The comments come after dozens of Express readers have raised their concerns over the new fuel.

Drivers have reported losing several miles to the gallon since pumps switched to the new compound in September.
