Ordering the engine costs the same as getting the 6.2-liter V8.
The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado with the new 3.0-liter inline-six Duramax turbodiesel engine officially makes 277 horsepower (204 kilowatts) and 460 pound-feet (624 Newton-meters) of torque. It hooks up to a 10-speed automatic gearbox. Opting for the new powerplant comes with the same price as the gas-fueled 6.2-liter V8, which costs $2,495 more than the 5.3-liter V8 or $3,890 over the 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. The turbodiesel is available on the LT, RST, LTZ and High Country trim levels.
The 3.0-liter turbodiesel uses an aluminum block and cylinder head to stay lightweight but has iron cylinder liners for greater durability. The mill makes its peak torque from just 1,500 rpm to 3,000 revs for immediate hauling ability. The powertrain also has exhaust braking that uses the engine’s compression to help slow down and reduce the need to use the traditional brakes in the Tow-Haul driving mode.
GM also touts the powerplant’s Active Thermal Management and ceramic glow plugs that allow the engine to warm up more quickly. The company claims this tech means that an engine block heater isn’t necessary until -22 degrees Fahrenheit (-30 Celcius), so don’t worry about keeping the work going when things get chilly.

The engine’s single turbocharger has variable geometry to adjust boost pressure dynamically and can run at a maximum 43.5 psi of boost. A water-to-air intercooler keeps the charge air cool.
Chevy initially intended to launch the Silverado’s diesel engine for the 2019 model year, but emissions certification took longer than initially expected. The 2020 truck also gets features like optional Adaptive Cruise Control and the ability to pair the 5.3-liter V8 with the 10-speed automatic gearbox.
