Experts at Quotezone said a “small investment in security can pay itself off” as they urged road users to install devices. Greg Wilson, Founder of Quotezone said small changes can make “big difference” and ensure their caravan does not become a target for thieves.

He said: “Even though August bank holiday is coming up fast caravanners still have time to make small security changes that will make a big difference to safeguarding their home from home now and over the lifetime of the caravan.

“If you install a tracker or alarm or you can find a safer place to keep your caravan, let your insurer know and see if you can get a discount.

“A small investment in security can pay itself off very quickly.”

The latest figures firm Quotezone show many caravan owners were failing to make simple precautions.

Data from the group revealed just 16 percent of caravans have tracking devices installed.

Figures are slightly better for alarms but a massive 52 percent of caravan owners still do not have one installed.

Despite the lack of protection, some caravans are now worth thousands of pounds and are targets for gangs.

Caravan insurance experts say caravan cover averages at £12,390 with the average contents insurance valued at over £1,100.

Security devices such as alarms and tracking devices cost as little as £200 and could cause insurance costs to tumble.

Specialist insurance firm Caravan Guard offers a 15 percent discount on policies if a tracking device is installed.

They said: “Our statistics show that fitting a caravan tracking device is the most effective way of beating the caravan thieves.

“If your caravan is stolen, a tracking device can immediately pinpoint its location and guide police to a quick recovery, often before the thieves have chance to get inside the caravan and cause any damage.”
