James Taylor, General Manager at Zipcar UK said the expansion of clean air zones was important to boost EV demand across the UK. However, he has also warned people should be encouraged to “reduce car ownership”.
Instead, he has called for the adoption of more car-sharing schemes to reduce the number of vehicles on the road.
Speaking to Express.co.uk, James Taylor said: “EVs will be far more accessible to people through car sharing rather than EV ownership.
“The expansion of clean air zones is vital to increasing EV adoption.
“But we believe people should be encouraged to reduce car ownership rather than to buy new clean air zone compliant vehicles.
“Growing the provision of car sharing across the UK is one way of doing this.”
His comments come just weeks after Zipcar’s Road to Electrification sustainability report.
The report claimed more than 23 private cars can be replaced by one car club project, which allows drivers to hire a vehicle when they need one.
Zipcar claims the recent launch of London’s new ULEZ extension was a “missed opportunity” by authorities to promote car-sharing in London.

Zipcar has said the Mayor of London should include car clubs along with other forms of transport when helping Londoners deal with ULEZ.
They claim around 20 percent of cars are estimated to be non-compliant with the ULEZ.
But, they warned the messages around expansion always seems to suggest drivers should “replace” these vehicles with complaint new ones.
Mr Taylor warned the new ULEZ extension did cause “disruption” for vehicle owners which could have been avoided.
