Analysis from WhatCar? found drivers could benefit from cash discounts of almost £6,000 in the run-up to September’s plate change. Some vehicles have seen up to 20 percent axed as garages make room for new models.

What Car?’s team of mystery shoppers found the average discount for cars was around 6.4 percent, or £2,694.

The consumer magazine confirms all discounts will be guaranteed for buyers through their New Car Buying service.

Volkswagen are offering the highest discount with 20 percent taken off the price of their new Passat.

It means drivers can pick up the model for £5,600 less than the list price first offered.

Meanwhile, Renault has axed the hugest cash value with £5,912 taken off the list price of their Zoe.

The 17.9 percent discount was the second-highest, just slightly above the 17.4 percent discount offered for the Nissan Micra.

Drivers can secure the Citroen C1 for 16.4 percent cheaper and the BMW 5 Series for 15.5 percent less.

Drivers paying by cash could secure as much as 7.2 percent off the list price of brand new models.

Drivers searching for a petrol model are likely to receive an average discount of 6.6 percent off original values.

Plug-in models can be purchased with a 6.3 percent average discount but savings are lower for fully-electric models.

Analysis from WhatCar? found electric car buyers were likely to see just a 3.1 percent price drop ahead of the plate change.
