The 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale small crossover will arrive with a $44,590 starting price, the Italian brand announced this week. The new entry-level model will bring the boutique brand’s lineup to three models, and is meant to support the low-selling but enchanting performance variants of the Giulia sedan and the Stelvio compact crossover.
Sharing a platform with the 2023 Dodge Hornet, the 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale will arrive only as a plug-in hybrid, and won’t have much direct competition. At 178.3 inches long, it’s at least six inches shorter than plug-in versions of the 2023 Lexus NX 450+, the Lincoln Corsair Grand Touring, and the Audi Q5. Those larger models start closer to $55,000. BMW shelved the X3 PHEV this year, and the Volvo XC40 is offered only with a mild-hybrid gas engine or as a full battery electric vehicle in the U.S.
For $44,590, including a $1,595 destination charge, the 2024 Tonale stands alone. The small crossover has a more welcoming embrace for shoppers interested in the brand but who may not want a more performance-minded Alfa.
It uses a 1.3-liter turbo-4 and 6-speed automatic for the front wheels and a 15.5-kwh battery pack that feeds an electric motor to power the rear wheels, resulting in all-wheel drive. Total output is 285 hp, and in electric-only mode it has an estimated 30-mile range.

The Tonale won’t shake off Alfa’s DNA, however. Available electronically controlled adaptive dampers should provide spirited handling, similar to the wagon-like Stelvio, and a quick steering ratio and 4-piston Brembo front brakes give it performance potential. It rides low like the Stelvio as well.
Alfa hasn’t disclosed feature availability, but the Tonale uses parent company Stellantis’ Uconnect5 operating system with a customizable 12.3-inch digital cluster and a 10.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The Tonale is a first step in the brand’s pivot to a fully electric lineup by 2027, with a new model promised every year before then. That promise was made late in 2021, however, around the time of the Tonale’s debut, which has been pushed back from the 2023 model year to 2024.
Pre-orders are open now for the Ti ($46,590) and Veloce ($49,090) models. The base Spring version will be available for order later in 2023, but Alfa hasn’t confirmed when deliveries will begin.
