If you love Porsche’s 911, Boxster, Cayman, and RS models, you should really love the Macan. The small luxury SUV, along with its larger Cayenne sibling, has powered Porsche to plenty of profits, which ultimately power the assembly lines for the brand’s sports cars. And now the Macan, of which nearly 140,000 have hit American streets since 2014, is coming in for a freshening for the 2022 model year. The update is intended to keep the Macan viable for a good, long time as an electrified sibling arrives to augment it within Porsche’s lineup.
We call the Macan an SUV because that’s technically what it is, but it has always driven more like a hot hatch—it’s imbued with plenty of the satisfying Porsche dynamics we love from the brand’s sportiest models. This year, three models will be available: base, S, and GTS, all of which have a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic (or PDK in Porsche parlance) as standard. (No word as of yet if the Turbo model will ultimately return, but we wouldn’t bet against it.)
The Lineup and Pricing
The entry model costs $56,250 and once again packs a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder, only with 13 more horses and 22 additional lb-ft of torque, for totals of 261 hp and 295 lb-ft. The mid-level, $66,750 S adopts the outgoing GTS’s twin-turbo 2.9-liter V-6 and its 375 horses and 383 lb-ft of torque. Porsche claims a 0-60-mph run in as quick as 4.4 seconds, but we reckon that’s fairly conservative: we sprinted a 2021 GTS to 60 mph in just 3.9 ticks. Top speed for the S is said to be 160 mph, and each one has Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) as standard.
The $81,250 2022 GTS uses the same engine as before, but it’s now a version that makes 434 hp and 406 lb-ft, enabling a 0-60-mph claim of 4.1 seconds that’s surely a few tenths higher than we’ll achieve at the test track. Vmax here is 169 mph, 2 mph higher than the previous Turbo range-topper. Every GTS gets the brand’s self-name Porsche Surface Coated Brakes (PSCB), an adaptive air suspension with a lower default ride height than before, re-tuned dampers, updated strut mounts, and more, promising reduced body roll and a suspension that’s up to 15 percent firmer than last year’s. The 2022 Macan GTS also adopts 21-inch black RS Spyder wheels, a “Sport” exhaust system, and special rocker panels.
If you’d like your GTS to look even harder-core, opt for the GTS Sport package, which adds the Sport Chrono pack (for max acceleration), torque vectoring programming for the rear differential, 18-way sport seats, gloss-black mirror caps, satin black trim up front and around back, and unique 21-inch rollers with sticky tires. Inside, Sport pack models also snag carbon-fiber accents, contrasting stitching, and more microsuede upholstery in various places.
Fresh Style Inside and Out
The Macan has always been a handsome little thing, and the few changes made to the 2022 model don’t change much. Up front, there are additional body-color elements, more integrated intakes, and LED headlamps. In addition, the rear diffuser has been embiggened, Sport Design side mirrors are standard, and seven new wheels designs in sizes ranging from 19 to 21 inches fill the catalog.
Inside the cabin, the center console is reshaped and has more capacitive controls than before; we’re not necessarily fans of touch-sensitive controls (give us buttons and knobs, please), but Porsche claims the setup freed up more storage space, one of the few areas in which the Macan actually needed improvement. (Of course, the little bin at the bottom of the stack doesn’t really add all that much space.) A 10.9-inch touchscreen display includes navigation and Apple CarPlay compatibility, the gear lever is redesigned, and sporty 911-style steering wheels can be plucked from the options sheet.
Every 2022 Porsche Macan gets a lane-departure warning system, plus front and rear parking sensors. If you want more safety tech, you can pony up for items that include self-parking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and lane keep assist. Look for the 2022 Porsche Macan S and GTS to arrive on U.S. dealers’ lots next spring, quickly followed by the base model.
