Provided the new Honda Civic Si doesn’t drive worse than its predecessor—and we have every reason to think it shouldn’t—it should remain a screaming deal for enthusiasts on a budget. Honda released full pricing for the redesigned 2022 Civic Si sedan, and at $28,315 to start, it costs a bit more than the $26,155 2020 Civic Si sedan—but it is better-equipped.
Look, we haven’t driven the new Si yet, but if the regular 11th-gen Civic is anything to go on, it likely will improve on the already fun-to-drive 10th-gen Civic Si. Heck, the ’22 Si even keeps the old model’s turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, limited-slip front differential, and six-speed manual transmission. Same ingredients, installed in a better Civic, you get it.
Hence why we’re not going to beat Honda up too bad over a $2,000 price hike for the newest Si sedan, even though it held the line on pricing for the rest of the Civic lineup. Sure, the 1.5-liter I-4 loses 5 hp—in the name of better tractability—though the unchanged 192 lb-ft of torque peaks 300 rpm sooner in the rev range, and the old car’s electronically adaptive suspension is gone. It’s not all less is more—the 2022 Civic Si is once again well equipped and now includes Type R-style red-colored front seats, the same 9.0-inch touchscreen reserved for the range-topping Civic Touring trim, a new 12-speaker Bose audio system, and a new 7.0-inch digital gauge cluster.
Honda made other small improvements throughout, including shortening the six-speed manual shifter’s throws by 10 percent. Fans of flying under the radar surely will appreciate the latest Civic’s lower-key, Accord-aping design, a far cry from the more assertively styled last-gen model and all its creases, vents, and general wildness.
As before, the Civic Si is so lavishly appointed there are virtually no options (outside of paint colors and a $200 summer tire option that replaces the standard all-seasons with more aggressive rubber). Do we wish the new Civic Si was still priced more firmly in the middle of the $20,000 range? Of course—that said, the new Civic is really quite good, and we figure the Si will be worth the additional scratch. And besides, most of the Civic Si’s key competitors have all shifted higher in price of late; while that’s no excuse for gouging, we will point out that the Volkswagen GTI still costs more, starting at over $30,000. Ditto the refreshed 2022 VW Jetta GLI sedan. Only Hyundai’s similar Elantra N Line sedan costs less.
