2022 Genesis G80 Sport First Look Review: Genesis’ Revelation?

Genesis plans to dust off the old Sport moniker and apply it to the latest iteration of its G80 luxury sedan. Like the prior G80 Sport, the likely 2022 model year addition to the G80 model line wears subtle but distinct styling cues to separate it from less driver-oriented G80 models. This includes a new front-end piece with a more prominent lower fascia, dark chrome fitted to the midsize sedan’s front and rear trim pieces, black headlight surrounds, a model-specific 20-inch wheel design, and a reworked rear bumper. Additionally, Genesis offers the G80 Sport with either red or black brake calipers.

The luxury brand futzes with the Sport’s insides, too, fitting the sportiest G80 trim with a three-spoke steering wheel, special seat quilting options, and a trio of available interior decors, including real aluminum and carbon fiber.

While the previous G80 Sport featured distinct design details, it also included a number of performance upgrades. Alas, Genesis is mum on such details when it comes to the new G80 Sport. Nevertheless, the brand notes it plans to offer the model with four-wheel steering.

We suspect Genesis will zhuzh up the G80 3.5T’s twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 for Sport duty, likely finessing the engine to produce north of 400 hp (the G80 3.5T currently makes do with 375 horses). Whereas other G80 models offer both rear- and all-wheel-drive options, we expect the Sport will come exclusively with the latter setup, as evidenced by the “AWD” badging on the vehicle in the photos.

Regardless, we anticipate Genesis will reveal more about the upcoming G80 Sport’s dynamic enhancements closer to the model’s formal launch later this year.
