This is the type of news that gets body-on-frame SUV enthusiasts’ blood pumping: a big, high-output V-8 engine available on more trims, a new electronic limited-slip differential, and better trailer assistance tech. All of this is newly available on the 2022 chevrolet tahoe and Suburban full-size SUVs, plus some other infotainment upgrades that are icing on the cake.
Let’s start with the V-8. The bottom line is that the 6.2-liter V-8, a 420-horsepower unit we’ve grown to love in many of its applications, was previously available only on the High Country trim for both the Tahoe and the Suburban. For 2022, that engine is now optional on the RST, Z71, and Premier trims, while it’s standard on the High Country (the 3.0-liter turbodiesel is still an option). Previously, RST, Z71, and Premier versions were only available with the turbodiesel (except Z71) or base 5.3-liter V-8s. Neither are bad motors, but we’re sure there’s a certain type of buyer who’ll be very keen to equip their Tahoe or Suburban in one of these newfound trim combinations.
Next up is the electronic limited slip differential, an option for Z71 models and replacing a mechanical limited slip differential from American Axle, a clutch-type unit that is distinct from the Eaton G80 locker found in GM trucks for decades. That means the Tahoe and Suburban are a little late to the party—the 2021 GMC Yukon got the eLSD for 2021—but better late than never.
Some creature comfort improvements inside are welcome, including an available 13 camera views to keep an eye on your surroundings (or load, or trailer). When you opt for an accessory camera, you can even look inside your trailer. All Tahoe and Suburbans above the LT grade now have a standard 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, too.
Also on trucks above the LT trim, Google is now standard, meaning that drivers will be able to use Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play—with all compatible with the SUVs’ Android Auto and Apple CarPlay implementations, too. The Google functions don’t require a smartphone, and can control phone and SMS message functions, audio volume, radio functions, Google Maps navigation, and HVAC controls. You’ll require a service plan, of course, to use these features.
Lastly, a few new safety features are standard on all trims: Front and Rear Park Assist and Lane Keeping Assist with Lane Departure warning. If you want to drive a 2022 Tahoe or Suburban, you need to buckle your seatbelt, too. Seatbelt interlocks prevent shifting out of park if either of the front occupants are in their seat but unbuckled. This is something that traffic safety advocates have wanted for a long time, and it’s 2021 for crying out loud. You should be wearing your belt anyways, and so this shouldn’t even be an issue for anybody.
The new 2022 Tahoe and Suburban start production in October and arrive at dealers a short time later.
