The 2022 Chevrolet Colorado is a pretty capable truck right out of the box, even when you don’t count the off-road animal that is the ZR2. Despite its age, it still rates highly in our midsize trucks rankings. The Z71 trim is pretty capable, too, but no one ever said no to more. So the 2022 Chevy Colorado Trail Boss package, which offers some upgrades over the standard truck, is more than welcome to join the party in our minds.
For those feeling protective of the ZR2’s unique traits, don’t sweat it. This is more of a suite of mild enhancements to the LT and Z71 trim than the Trail Boss copping any of the ZR2’s special bits, such as its Multimatic DSSV shocks or its locking-front differential. But if you want a little more style and capability than the normal truck offers, it might be right for you.
The Trail Boss package is a dealer-installed situation and the headliners are the 1.0-inch lift kit, 17-inch ZR2 wheels (painted black), and red tow hooks—useful and cool looking. The package also includes front- and mid-mounted skid plates and blacked-out emblems, plus the front air dam is deleted for additional clearance.
For those who want to actually take their Colorado off-road, the 2022 Trail Boss removes some stuff that might get ripped off or hung up while providing a little extra clearance all around. The skid plates are useful, but rock sliders would be even better—luckily, the ZR2’s “rocker panel guards” are available through General Motors and should bolt right up.
Chevrolet hasn’t released pricing or availability of the package yet, but stay tuned.
