2019 Toyota Hilux updated, receives AEB for Australia

Popular not just among the rural set, the Toyota Hilux has been the Australian best-seller, and has now received a considerable upgrade in its safety package. The 2019 Hilux range for the Australian market now gets autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection and daytime detection, in addition to adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning with steering assist and road sign monitoring.

“This is certainly a great move for Toyota customers, the segment and more broadly, the market. It is a strong example of consumer-driven change. Utes are the most popular choice among Australian consumers and no matter the use, the highest levels of safety should be provided,” said Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) CEO James Goodwin.

The additional safety equipment throughout the Hilux range – from the AUD$21,865 (RM63,186) Hilux WorkMate to the range-topping AUD$64,490 (RM186,365) Hilux Rugged X – is offset by a price increase ranging from AUD$800 (RM2,312) to AUD$875 (RM2,529).

The base WorkMate variant now gets the updated instrument cluster which integrates the 4.2-inch multi-information display (MID) that is standard on all other variants for its market, and moves to a Hi-Rider configuration, with the 4×2 single-cab discontinued, along with the double-cab 2.4 litre turbodiesel.

Contenders in the pick-up truck market down under already equipped with AEB include the Ford Ranger, Mercedes-Benz X-Class, Ssangyong Musso and the Mitsubishi Triton. In the Malaysian market, the 2018 Toyota Hilux facelift received seven airbags, vehicle stability control (VSC), reverse sensor and EBD with brake assist for the RM119,300 2.4L L-Edition; the RM133,900 2.8L variant added Downhill Assist Control.
